Posted on Wednesday, August 07, 2013 Share
On August 1st DWD employees participated with more than 1,000 volunteers from 55 organizations in the 21st annual United Way Day of Caring. This year’s project was at McMillen Center for Health Education where employees spent the day clearing grapevine and brush from the fence row, as well as working in the community garden.
The Center provides 76 programs on general health; safety; HIV/STDs; drug/ alcohol/ tobacco use prevention; nutrition and fitness; human growth and development; bullying prevention, and more. Sample program topics include the Kinderhealth program to teach children about maintaining their health, the Health Adventure program to teach third-graders the four keys of staying healthy, the Balance Your Act program to provide information to middle school students about the health risks and prevention of obesity; and the Breast Self Exam and Testicular Self Exam programs to provide teens with information on the early detection of cancer.
While at the Center, DWD employees also got see TAM (Transparent Anatomical Mannikin) in action, which for many brought back memories from their elementary school days. To find out more about McMillen visit their website at mcmillencenter.org.
