Board Report Card

Many nonprofits have a board responsibilities document detailing the expectations of the board as a whole, as well as individually.   But how do you assess your board members’ performance in carrying out these responsibilities?  One way is to develop a board report card.

A board report card is a tool that includes the key responsibilities of board members, as individuals.  Every board member has their own report card that is reviewed and updated at each board meeting for responsibilities completed.  Not only does this tool force board members to think about their contributions but also helps to improve board performance and provides a better understanding of expectations.  The governance committee maintains the report cards in between meetings and monitors progress for any board members that may need an extra push. 

The following is an example of a few items that may be included on a board report card.

1. Attend at least 80% of all board meetings.

2. Attend organization's annual fund raiser.                          X
