Board Giving

Does your organization have 100% board giving?

Board members are responsible for the financial health of the organization.  As part of this responsibility, each board member should make an annual contribution to the organization.  The dollar amount is not as important as the act of giving.  Normally the amount of contributions received by the board is not significant compared to the organization’s total revenue; however, it shows that the board is fully invested in the organization.

Board members are leaders of the organization.  By encouraging 100% board giving, it sets a good example for others and shows the board is committed to the organization.  It is also makes the fund raising process easier for board members, in that they can share their reason for giving to the organization.

Many organizations have giving policies that require board members to make an annual contribution.  Often times it is not a set dollar amount but a “meaningful gift.”  Other times, the policy may allow for board members to be responsible for raising a set dollar amount so that the contributions may come from family, friends, colleagues, etc. in addition to the board member.

Is your board leading by example and giving to your organization?  If not, how can you ask others to support your organization that your board does not financially support?
