Fundraising During the Pandemic

Many nonprofits have had to cancel or postpone fundraisers due to the pandemic.  But just because we may not be able to gather in person, does not mean your organization should stop fundraising.  It is key during times like this to continue to ask for support so that your oganization can continue its mission.

  • Enlist your board members.  Board members should play an important role in gaining support for your organization, especiallly during times of crisis.  Ask your board members to make introductions to possible donors and share your organization’s accomplishments.
  • Make your donors aware of the increase in chartiable deductions for taxpayers that do not itemize.  The $300 above the line deduction for cash contributions made to a qualified organization in 2020 has been extended to 2021.  The 2021 deduction is $300 for individual returns and $600 for married filing jointly returns.
  • Go virtual.  Consider a virtual fundraiser such as a 5k run, gala, gaming tournament, or concert.  Encourage attendees to post pictures on their social media accounts and tag your organization.
  • Devote time to thank existing donors and vollunteers.  Let them know all of the good things that your organization is able to achieve with their support. especially in times of uncertainty.
  • Consider collaborations.  is there another nonprofit, business, or church that your organization could benefit from collaborating with on an event.
  • Continue to tell your story.  Use your website and social media to make updates on what your organization is doing.
  • Don’t stop fundraising.
