New IRS Individual Online Account – Why You Should Have One

Beginning in 2021, IRS created an online account option for individual taxpayers.  This is an easier way to find out information about your tax account without trying to call IRS and be on hold for days at a time.

This secure system requires multi-factor authorization and a set up process by each individual taxpayer. Registration is done through Secure Access.  Both the taxpayer and spouse must have accounts even if filing a joint tax return.

With this account a Taxpayer can view:

  1. Any payoff amount.
  2. The balance for each tax year for which taxes are owed.
  3. A full payment history.
  4. Key information from the most current tax return as originally filed.
  5. Payment plan details, if applicable.
  6. Digital copies of select IRS notices.
  7. Economic Impact Payments if received.
  8. The address on file.
  9. Authorization requests from tax professionals.

After viewing, a Taxpayer can:

  1. Make a payment online – tax due or estimated payments.
  2. Set up an online payment agreement.
  3. Access tax records via Get Transcript.
  4. Approve or reject authorization requests (POA) from tax professionals.

Additional options and upgrades are made regularly.  This is a new and evolving platform.
