Reflections from My First Tax Season – Brandon Bultemeier

As the dust settles from my first busy season at DWD, I’ve had a chance to reflect on what has been an incredibly valuable and eye-opening experience. Coming in as an associate with only prior intern experience, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect—but now I’m walking away with a stronger foundation, a greater appreciation for the work we do, and a deep respect for the team around me.

Learning Through Experience

Throughout tax season, I had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of tax returns, including business returns (1120S and 1065), individual returns, and even property tax filings. This hands-on exposure helped me build a much better understanding of how returns flow and how to navigate our software, UltraTax, more confidently. Each type of return came with its own set of challenges, but also new opportunities to learn and grow.

More Manageable Than Expected

Like many, I came into busy season expecting long, difficult days. And yes, there were definitely moments where the workload was intense—but I was surprised by how quickly the days went by. Once I settled into a routine, I found myself gaining momentum and confidence. The fast pace actually helped make the time fly, and before I knew it, we were nearing the April deadline.

A Supportive Team Makes All the Difference

What stood out to me most throughout the season was the support from my coworkers. Despite their own full workloads, they always made time to answer my questions and offer guidance. I never once felt like I couldn’t ask for help, and that kind of environment made a big impact on my learning curve and overall experience. I’m grateful to be part of a team that values collaboration, patience, and continuous learning.

Going Forward

As I look ahead, I’m excited to keep building on what I’ve learned and I will be ready to tackle next year’s busy season with even more confidence. It’s been a rewarding beginning to my career at DWD—and I’m only getting started!
